Church AdministratorHe loves me, He loves me not, I’m accepted, I’m accepted not – that was my Christian walk for the past 30 years. It all began in 1962 at an “old time revival” meeting and from that moment on I did every thing I could to keep my self saved and win God’s approval. My salvation depended on me and my performance. I obey therefore I’m accepted. Then, here at The Well, I heard the Gospel message – Jesus – not a stack of rules – just Jesus and what He has done for me. And now – I’m accepted therefore I obey! The unique self-image that the Gospel has place in my life is that “ I am more wicked then I dared believe but more loved and accepted in Christ then I ever dared hope.”Church administration keeps me busy but my heart is in Women’s Ministry and being the Mother at The Well! I have many adopted sons, daughters and grandchildren! I love conversation over a cup of coffee, books, old movies, sewing, crocheting, the view of the Portland riverfront at night, long walks on the beach and my grandchildren.Family
Tom is my incredible husband who for the past 40 years has put up with me and taught me much about laughter and enjoying life. We have 3 amazing sons and daughter-in-laws serving God, Tom and Halea Pastors of Lifehouse in SE Portland, Tim and Brooke serving at Lifehouse, Travis and Erin are in the process of planting a church called “Roots” in the Gateway/Parkrose area of Portland, and the joys in our life – our grandchildren – Eleanor, Tommy, Frances, Elliot , Ezra, Eli, Nehemiah and Jude.Quote

Julia Alvarez
Children’s PastorI am a native Oregonian and don’t want to ever leave. I went to Cleveland High School and graduated ’97. I studied massage at Oregon School of Massage and graduated ’07. Still awaiting God’s timing to get my license and start practicing. I grew up in a Christian Family with 11 siblings and two wonderful parents. I asked God into my life at a really young age, 11 and was baptized. It was a few years later during Jr. High and High School when I really started to grasp what it means to fight to love Jesus more than I love this world. God led my family to The Well almost five years ago and I can’t begin to explain how blessed we are to walk with these men and woman in our community. My relationship with God continues to grow deeper and stronger every day, and I believe The Well has played a huge part in that. Some might say the gospel can’t be preached every single Sunday, but it’s just not true. His amazing Grace is what it’s all about.I have always loved children and knew that I wanted to be a mother someday, but becoming the Children’s Pastor, I really didn’t see that one coming. When the opportunity arrived, I said no way, not me. I was in massage school and pregnant with our 3rd child (& 4th). I thought this was a job for someone else whose cup wasn’t already overflowing. After awhile I realized this was what God wanted me to do, and I had no idea how much I would love it. I’m so blessed to be at the heart of our church ministering to all our beautiful families.Family
My husband Marvin and I have been married since February 2003, and we have four beautiful children. Noah(9), Esther(5), Esso and Lila(2)Quote

To lack what You withhold,
To relinquish what You take,

Testimony

I grew up in Yakima, Washington, the youngest and craziest of three. I started singing in children’s church when I was two years old and have been singing unto the Lord ever since. I accepted Jesus into my heart at a young age, but spent most of my childhood and teenage years being religious rather than relational in my approach to God. Soon after high school, I became discontent with being spiritual and began the pursuit of knowing and loving God’s heart. What a beautiful, life-changing transition!

I moved to Portland in 2004 to attend Multnomah University, and have joyfully called Portland “home” ever since. I worked for Multnomah University in Student Ministries before pursuing the Lord on an adventure to Nashville, Tennessee. While He used music to draw me there, that season of life had nothing to do with music and everything to do with trusting the Lord with my heart, dreams and life. He wooed me away to bury the good news of the Gospel deep into my heart, and I will never be the same because of it.

I returned to Portland in 2009 to lead worship for those in life recovery at Portland Rescue Mission. Their unashamed need for Jesus often led me in worship every week! In December, I attended my first worship service at The Well and cried my way through it! It was a tall drink of water to my thirsty soul: there was life, there was joy, and it was because of the Gospel. I soon joined The Well Family, started serving in the worship ministry, and am now on staff as the Worship Coordinator! God is good, kind, loving and faithful!

Family

I am preparing to start my own family with my wonderful fiancé, Dan Son! We met in 2011 at a youth retreat for a ministry Dan started called Theophilus. I was leading worship with our mutual friend, Travis Vice, who had been scheming to set us up. Well…it worked! Travis’ Mom, Teresa, also had a hand in encouraging Dan to pay attention to me. We are so grateful to the Lord (and the Vice’s!) ;) for bringing us together, and are excited to see how God will lead us and use us as a couple for His glory!
